History

Since its founding on 14 April 1991, EHC Regensburg has been writing ice hockey history in Regensburg. Here you will find the most important milestones, season by season.

Founding of the club

Founded in the “Holzkistl” in Bach an der Donau on 14.04.1991 with 17 founding members.

EHC Regensburg grew out of the team “King Kong Killers”, which was allowed onto the ice at the ice stadium at the Nibelungenbrücke on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10:00 pm after public skating or after games of EV Regensburg.

The first club address was Ludwig-Thoma-Str. 16, Regensburg. The first board was made up as follows:

1st chairman: Wolfgang Fisch
Treasurer: Rupert Semmelmann
Secretary: Manfred Erhard

To get started in league play, our team needed support from donors and sponsors, including from the very beginning the hairdresser “Modern Hair” in the shopping centre. Timekeepers and bench staff came from the team’s own ranks. The records list Rupert Semmelmann and Manfred Erhard as timekeepers, Johann Meindl and Matthias Weber on the penalty bench and Thomas Feuerer as scorekeeper.

From the founding years and the first registered team, three members are still “active” on the ice and play with the “veterans”.

From the start to promotion

Season 1992/1993

League: Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Bezirksliga Group 2

Standing: Place 8, 14 games, 1:27 points, 32:138 goals

The first game took place on 18.10.1992 at the ice stadium at the Nibelungenbrücke .

The first coach at that time was Bernd Vossenkaul, who led the team and, despite the difficult start in the league, kept it together with plenty of fun in the game.

In the third year of official play, the team reached 5th place. For the first time in the club’s history, our members designed an advertising poster with various sponsors. From this season on, the team travelled to away games by bus . The reason was a serious accident on the way home from a game in Pfaffenhofen.

Standing: Place 3, 16 games, 20:12 points, 112:89 goals
Penalty statistics, 16 games, 280 min, 17.5 min/game

In the cup the team prevailed in the second round against USC München with 6:2 and 12:8 in two games. In the third round, EHC was drawn against EA Kempten. Chairman Wolfgang Fisch then wrote an open letter to the BEV proposing a swap, citing the long away trip of 300 km and bus costs of 1,200 DM. The opponent was to be EC Höchstadt, who had already agreed. The exchange of letters caused a small stir. The clubs and the BEV could not reach a final agreement, so ESV Gebensbach and EHC Regensburg withdrew from the cup. In the league, the duels against the Isar Haie Dingolfing were always hard fought and extremely close.

Season 1996/1997

League: Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Bezirksliga Group 1, Promotion to the Landesliga

Standing: Place 1, 16 games, 23:1 points, 107:25 goals

In the fifth year chairman Wolfgang Fisch set the goal of finishing in the top three. One eye was already on the Landesliga. The toughest rivals in the league were EHC Kulmbach and the 1b team of ESV Bayreuth. For the first time, press reports were sent specifically to the local newspapers. One report even went to the local TV station TVA. In the Bezirksliga semi-final, the team faced a tough nut to crack in heavyweight ERC Sonthofen. Our team lost both games, 4:5 in Sonthofen and 3:8 at home the following day. Not least because of a flu outbreak, our team was weakened. Above all, it was down to the opponent, who had two players in Peter Endras and Eduard Endras who simply could not be contained; they alone were involved in seven goals. In the end, the team secured third place in the Bavarian championship against ASV Dachau with 5:3 and 8:3 in two games.

Coach Pavel Novak sen., responsible for the sporting performance of EHC Regensburg since the 95/96 season, got everything right this season and was able to celebrate promotion to the Landesliga at the end of it.

This season Martin Kurt was coach and ran things behind the bench. This season the team already held its own very well against the competition.

Season 1997/1998

League: Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Landesliga

Standing: Landesliga, place 5, 10 games, 4:16 points, 53:73 goals

In the sixth year EHC Regensburg received the nickname Spiders, which was also entered in the statutes. Jiri Peuker arranged a press appointment with the new jerseys featuring spider images and spiderweb designs. The change to the statutes went hand in hand with the introduction of the sports director role.

The position was filled from then on by Erwin Weiß , who moved from EV Regensburg to EHC Regensburg.

The long-awaited arena provided excellent conditions for ice sports in Regensburg. From then on, the three main tenants could train more professionally in the new multi-purpose arena and hold their competitions without being affected by the weather.

EHC started with 0:10 points, which led to parting ways with coach Stefan Turba .

The team around captain Sebastian Klinzner urgently needed fresh impetus. Signing the experienced coach Bohumil Kratochvil was a stroke of luck for EHC Regensburg, as he gave the team new life, structure and enthusiasm. The team lost only one more game, against direct rival EV Regensburg, whom it beat 3:7 in the second meeting a week later. One of the match winners in the Spiders’ revenge against EVR 2 was Tobias Artmeier with four goals. Despite reinforcements from the Oberliga squad with Sven Gerike, Korbinian Zierer, Andreas Tahedl, Mario Dörfler and Jakob Leserer, the EVR 1b had to concede a 7:3 (3:1, 1:0, 3:2) win to EHC Regensburg in the derby of the senior Bezirksliga Nord.

Rebuilding EHC Regensburg

With the 22nd year of the club’s existence, the Erwin Weiß era at EHC Regensburg came to an end. Coach Günther Seidl and Erwin Weiß decided, because the roster was too small , not to register the team for the Bezirksliga. Dissolving the club was discussed and made the rounds within the club. After several general meetings , Erwin Weiß officially stepped down on 30.06.2012.

Season 2012/2013

League: A new beginning, no league play

Standing: Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Bezirksliga Group 1, 1 Platz, ERC Ingolstadt, 12 gms., 21:3 pts., 103:26 goals

This year the club was on the verge of folding. Players,, former officials and founding members organised another extraordinary general meeting to tackle the adventure of a fresh start through new elections .

As part of this, the club statutes were revised and a set of club rules was drawn up to make the management of the club more transparent and structured in future.

The club address and a letterbox were set up at the Donau Arena, Walhalla Allee 22, 93055 Regensburg .

On 14.08.2012, at the Gasthaus Held in Irl, the new board was elected and new structures were set up in the club. In sporting, financial and organisational terms, league play could no longer be realised, and the registration deadline had long since passed.

With our veterans team and the remaining players from the 1st Team , the club was reorganised and the adventure began. The City of Regensburg and RBB supported EHC Regensburg in this difficult phase and guaranteed the sports funding as well as the ice times.

At the end of the season, for the first time in a long while, a proper annual report was presented to all members at the ordinary general meeting.

In the 23rd year (the second year under the new leadership), despite great commitment and after weighing up the risks, the general meeting decided to consolidate for another year and not register for league play.

As a result, more players who were interested in league play were lost.

Season 2014/2015

League: A new beginning, no league play

Standing: Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Bezirksliga Group 1, 1 Platz, EHC Bayreuth, 12 games, 30 pts., 80:20 goals

In the 24th year EHC Regensburg unfortunately continued to lose ground despite good organisation. For financial and organisational reasons, the club was again unable to register for league play.

As a result, in accordance with the sports funding guidelines of the City of Regensburg, the sports funding and the favourable conditions for the allocation of ice times were further restricted. The convenient Tuesday ice time from 7:45 to 9:15 pm, used regularly for years, had to be given up.

In Bezirksliga play, the 3-point rule with overtime and, if necessary, a shootout was introduced.

Many of our regular players moved to direct rival EV Regensburg during the season.

Entering league play

Season 2015/2016

League: Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Bezirksliga Group 1

Standing: Bezirksliga place 7, 16 games, 14 points, 42:79 goals

After three seasons without league play, the club had been reorganised enough to enter the Bezirksliga Nord with a young, inexperienced team.

Due to a lack of resources, the new board members Stephan Zwickl, Armin Eberhardt and Alex Eberhardt often not only had to steer the club but also take on double roles. Despite all the obstacles, the first step back into league play succeeded. As EVR no longer registered a 1b team, players from the 1b, Phillip Ippisch and Michael Reichhart, and coach Bill Helmrath were able to strengthen the team.

The ice time on Wednesdays from 8:20 to 9:50 pm was also handed over to EHC.

25 years of EHC Regensburg

In the twenty-fifth year , for the first time, the clubs EV Regensburg and EHC Regensburg entered into a cooperation . This was made possible by the new chairmen Ivo Stellmann Zidek (EVR) and Armin Eberhardt (EHCR). EHC registered a team in the Bezirksliga Nord and took the next step.

The board was further strengthened and expanded with more ice hockey enthusiasts.

Season 2017/2018

League: Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Bezirksliga Group 1

Standing: Bezirksliga, place 4, 18 games, 28 pts., 83:71 goals

The team was further strengthened this season, building anticipation for the coming season. Stefan Turba also joined the coaching team. Maximilian Rusch was won over to organise the 1st Team. Spreading the work across several shoulders, and the considerable relief this brought, was a gain for the club right from the start. In sporting terms, this more than compensated for the departure of Oliver Seitz. The team made its mark from the outset with a win against perennial champions ERC Ingolstadt in the first league game of the season. In the end, our team secured fourth place in a balanced league. ESV Waldkirchen became champions, and the team finished six points behind second-placed EHC Bayreuth.

Standing: Bezirksliga, place 2, 16 games, 38 pts., 121:31 goals
Play-off quarter-final, 3 games against Waldkraiburg

Stefan Turba returned as coach and strengthened the team; he was also able to draw on further resources around the team with team manager Gerald Schröder and player-coach Michael Hofmeister, who came from ERC Regen. Kevin Kroschinski, Gustav Poncar and the Nerb brothers were to take responsibility as leaders and move the team forward. No sooner said than done: after the restart in the 2015/2016 season, Stefan Turba achieved the most successful season in a balanced league.

The team reached the playoffs ahead of ERC Ingolstadt and behind EHC Bayreuth. In the quarter-final, however, it lost an extremely close three-game series against Waldkraiburg.

Season 2019/2020

League: Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Bezirksliga Group 2

Standing: Bezirksliga, place 3, 18 games, 38 pts., 99:67 goals

Over the summer, EHC Regensburg was able to strengthen the team with well-known players such as “Vitali Stähle” in order to build on the very good performances of the 2018/2019 season. Expectations in the club were correspondingly high. In the cup competition the team was once again beaten in the quarter-final by the previous year’s playoff opponent Waldkraiburg 1b. In the league, the team finished just four points behind second-placed direct rival EHC Straubing. The successful season was rounded off with a Family & Friends Day in the Donau Arena, attended by many players, children and friends.

Season 2020/2021

League: Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Bezirksliga Group 2

Since the 19/20 season was cancelled in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic , only two pre-season games have been played so far. Play was interrupted again from November 2020. The games against EV Aich and ESC Dorfen 1b could not take place because of COVID-19. Training has also been suspended since November 2020. For the first time, EHC Regensburg is taking part in the Bavarian ice hockey championship with esports players .

A breath of fresh air

Season 2021/2022

League: Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Bezirksliga Group Nord

The club also went through a change in 2021:

As unanimously decided at the general meeting on 02.12.2021, there was a change in the board of EHC Regensburg e.V. as of 14.01.2022.

The following were elected as new board members:

Board member for members: Daniel Schmitt

Board member for finance: Maximilian Rusch

Board member for public relations: David Jaskolka

We would like to express our sincere thanks to our previous chairman Alex Eberhardt . Without him, the club would not have the standing in the region that it has today. Many thanks also go to our former board member for members Stephan Zwickl, who always supported everyone involved with advice and practical help. Further thanks go to our long-standing member and former board member for public relations Armin Eberhardt, who did outstanding work for the club’s positive image.

Season 2022/2023

League: Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Bezirksliga Group Nord

At Christmas 2021, the board of EHC Regensburg decided to take on the challenge of founding a women’s ice hockey team.

When the idea first came up, many people smiled at it.
One quote that has stuck in our minds was: “Women’s hockey? You’ll never get a whole team together!”
But we were determined to prove them wrong.

The first step in building the team was finding players. This turned out to be a difficult task, as many women in the area had never played on a women’s ice hockey team. Until then they had been forced to play on mostly male-dominated teams. Nevertheless, we managed to find a group of committed women who were ready to build a strong women’s team and pave the way to league play. What struck us in particular was that many of the players were willing to drive 100 km or more to play ice hockey in Regensburg.

Next, the team had to find a coach. After a short search, the team found a coaching duo willing to learn the ropes of coaching and bring women’s ice hockey to Regensburg.

With coaches and a team in place, the next step was to find a venue. This proved to be another challenge, as the ice rink in Regensburg no longer had the capacity to cover training and game times for another team.
But after many negotiations and close cooperation with das Stadtwerk Regensburg.Bäder und Arenen GmbH, the Eisbären Regensburg, EV Regensburg and Ski- und Wanderclub 1946, the team was able to secure a place to train and play.

Today, the women’s ice hockey team of EHC Regensburg is a respected team in the Upper Palatinate with a strong and committed group of players.

We at EHC Regensburg are proud of what we have achieved and look forward to what the future holds for ice hockey in our city.

Season 2023/2024

League:

  • Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Bezirksliga Group Nord
  • Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Landesliga Group A

Key events and successes

  • Promotion of the women’s ice hockey team: The women of EHC Regensburg achieved a remarkable success in the 2023/2024 season by winning promotion to the Bayernliga. This promotion was made possible by first place in the placement round, Group B. The success is a significant milestone, as the women’s team had only recently been founded.
  • General meeting 2024: At the ordinary general meeting held in June 2024, the club re-elected the board consisting of Daniel Schmitt, Maximilian Rusch and David Kirsch.

EHC Regensburg looks back on a successful 2023/2024 season, marked by sporting success and a strong club community. The future of the club looks promising, with a committed fan base and ambitious goals for the coming years.

Season 2024/2025

League: Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Bezirksliga Nord (men), Bayernliga (women)

After promotion, our women’s ice hockey team played in the Bayernliga for the first time. The programme included double-header weekends at the start of the year and the qualification round in spring 2025.

  • Cooperation with the Eisbären Regensburg: Back in January 2024, the two clubs had agreed on an official cooperation. EHC Regensburg and the Eisbären Regensburg do not see themselves as competitors but as complementary forces in Regensburg ice hockey.
  • Friendly against the Canadian Lakers: On 28 March 2025, EHC Regensburg welcomed the Lakers, a team of players from the Canadian finance and insurance industry on a European tour, in the side rink of the Donau-Arena. Admission was free, followed by a get-together of both teams.
  • Family & Friends Day: On 06.04.2025 we celebrated the end of the season together with families and friends on the ice of the training rink.
  • General meeting 2025: In summer 2025 the board invited members to the ordinary general meeting.

Season 2025/2026

League: Bavarian Ice Sports Association (BEV), Bezirksliga Nord (men), Bayernliga (women)

The women’s team had an eventful season. In November 2025 the board ended its cooperation with the then head coach. The rest of the season was managed under the leadership of Maximilian Rusch, who was granted a special permit by the association for this purpose. Under his leadership, the team qualified for the Bayernliga playoff semi-finals.

Looking back on four years of women’s ice hockey

At Christmas 2021, the board had decided to found a women’s ice hockey team. The idea, which some initially smiled at, became a team in the 2022/2023 season that was promoted to the Bayernliga in 2024 and reached the playoff semi-finals in 2026.

In May 2026 the club had to announce that the women’s team could no longer be registered for the 2026/27 season. The reason was an unexpected and significant drop in the number of players, which, despite intensive efforts, no longer allowed regular and responsible league play. A qualified coach for the new season had already been found. Over the past four years, the club invested a great deal of resources in building up women’s ice hockey in Regensburg and very much regrets this development. Our thanks go to all players, helpers and supporters who walked this path with us.

35 years of EHC Regensburg

On 14 April 2026 the club turned 35. To mark the anniversary, EHC Regensburg hosted the Donau Cup on 1 August 2026, a recreational ice hockey tournament at the Stadtwerk.Donau-Arena.

Donau Cup 2026

The anniversary tournament at the Stadtwerk.Donau-Arena

Date: 1 August 2026, Stadtwerk.Donau-Arena Regensburg

To mark its 35th anniversary, EHC Regensburg invited eight teams to the Donau Cup. For a whole day the teams battled for the trophy on the ice; many games were closely contested and the tournament stayed exciting to the very end.

The tournament was won by the Griffins München, who deservedly beat the Bayern Rangers in the final. Our own Basti Stecher was named player of the tournament.

Alongside the Griffins München and the Bayern Rangers, the EHC Regensburg Phantoms, Night Wolves Passau, Buffalos Hockey Nürnberg, Ranzinger Devils, HSG Uni München and Flying Elbows Amberg took part. Our thanks go to all teams, the referees, DLRG Wasserrettung Regensburg for the first aid service, the team of the Stadtwerk.Donau-Arena and all the helpers.

EHC Regensburg today

Today EHC Regensburg consists of the 1st Team in the Bezirksliga Nord, the EHC Phantoms as a recreational team, and the veterans. The board is made up of Daniel Schmitt (members), Maximilian Rusch (finance) and David Kirsch (public relations). We play our home games in the training rink of the Donau-Arena in Regensburg.

Stories, anecdotes, milestones

1993/1994: EHC Regensburg builds a new ice stadium

On 1 April 1994 we allowed ourselves a prank (at the time there were disputes in Regensburg about a new ice stadium): in Donaustauf, on a field towards Tegernheim, we put up a huge construction sign: “EHC Regensburg is building a new ice stadium here”, made completely professionally by the company Guggenberger, with a wheel loader and excavator on site, under the patronage of manufacturer Jochen Czech, accompanied by star physio Klaus Eder, and with a press and photo appointment with the whole team and its “new” surroundings. This made the City of Regensburg (Mayor Christa Meier) so nervous that we were given an appointment there, which Matt Meindl, a large farmer from Donaustauf and ice hockey veteran, attended. The city wanted to find out whether we were serious about the project or not. Because of the huge press frenzy, so many “old” Donaustauf ice hockey cracks called us offering donations and great support that we almost considered turning the prank into reality. At the fixtures meeting in Würzburg, Wolfgang Fisch was even approached by the later builder of the Donau Arena; a stadium on leasehold land would have cost us around 750,000 DM.
