Review: thrilling to the very end

On 1 August 2026 we celebrated our club’s 35th anniversary with the Donau Cup. Eight teams, two rinks and a whole day of ice hockey at the Stadtwerk.Donau-Arena: it was a tournament that stayed exciting right to the end.

Many games were closely contested. From the first face-off in the morning to the award ceremony in the afternoon, there were exciting moments, great saves and plenty of passion on both rinks. This is exactly how we wanted our anniversary tournament to be.

The tournament was won by the Griffins München, who deservedly beat the Bayern Rangers in the final. Our own Basti Stecher was named player of the tournament.

Thank you to all teams

A big thank you to all eight teams who turned the Donau Cup into a real ice hockey celebration:

  • EHC Regensburg Phantoms
  • Griffins München
  • Night Wolves Passau
  • Buffalos Hockey Nürnberg
  • Ranzinger Devils
  • HSG Uni München
  • Bayern Rangers
  • Flying Elbows Amberg

Thanks also to the referees, to DLRG Wasserrettung Regensburg for the first aid service, to the team of the Stadtwerk.Donau-Arena and to all the helpers without whom a tournament day like this would not be possible. We hope to see you back on the ice with us soon!

Everything you need to know about the Donau Cup at a glance. Just click on a question.

What is the Donau Cup?

The Donau Cup is a recreational ice hockey tournament for 8 teams, organised by EHC Regensburg e.V. to mark our club’s 35th anniversary. Games are played on two rinks in parallel, with a group stage, semi-finals, a game for 3rd place and the final.

When and where does the tournament take place?

On Saturday, 1 August 2026 at the Stadtwerk.Donau-Arena, Walhalla-Allee 22, 93059 Regensburg. Doors open at 8:00 am, and the first games start at 8:00 am on both rinks.

Is there an admission fee?

No, admission is free. Spectators, families and friends are very welcome.

What is the format?

2 groups of 4 teams each play a full group stage (round robin, 3 games per team). After that, all 8 places are decided in direct placement games: the fourth-placed teams play for 7th place, the third-placed for 5th place, the second-placed for 3rd place, and the two group winners contest the final. Games are 2 x 15 minutes running time.

Group ranking in case of a tie: points, then goal difference, then head-to-head, then goals scored.

What are the game times on tournament day?

Play starts at 8:00 am on both rinks. The group stage runs until approx. 12:50 pm in the training rink and until approx. 12:55 pm in the arena. From 1:10 pm games are only played in the main arena: game for 7th place at 1:10 pm, 5th place at 1:50 pm, 3rd place at 2:35 pm, final at 3:35 pm. Award ceremony at approx. 4:15 pm on the ice. You can find the current schedule further down this page. Short-notice changes are possible.

What rules apply?

Only recreational players are allowed, no active league players. Light body contact is allowed, hard checks are forbidden. Normal icing is called, and line changes on icing are allowed. Fun and fair play come first, because everyone wants to be able to go to work again on Monday.

Are there referees?

Yes, every game is officiated by at least one referee. The referees’ decisions are final.

Is there first aid on site?

Yes, first aid is provided by the DLRG throughout the entire tournament day. So if anything happens, professional help is right there.

Which locker room does my team have?

The locker rooms are labelled with the team names on tournament day. The allocation:

Arena locker rooms:
A1, Griffins München
A2, Buffalos Hockey Nürnberg
A5, Night Wolves Passau
A6, HSG Uni München

Training rink locker rooms:
TH1, Flying Elbows Amberg
TH2, Ranzinger Devils
TH3, Bayern Rangers

Can the locker rooms be locked? Where can I keep valuables?

The locker rooms are open during the tournament and are not locked. Lockers are available for valuables in the changing room of the public skating area: for a 2 euro coin you can store your wallet, keys and phone safely there.

Is there a speech or opening ceremony before the tournament?

No, we deliberately do without long announcements. The first game starts right at 8:00 am. All teams know the rules in advance and the format is fixed, so: skates on and onto the ice.

What do we need to submit before the tournament?

Each team sends us a team sheet in advance with the name, position and jersey number of all players. No sheet, no play: players who are not on the list may not go on the ice. Please send the team sheet to info@ehcregensburg.de.

How are the players insured?

Participation is at your own risk. The organiser does not provide any insurance. Players are usually covered by their own club or their health insurance. If in doubt, please check this in advance with your club or your insurer.

Can my team still register?

No, the field is complete with 8 teams and registration is closed. We will decide after the tournament whether there will be another edition in 2027.

Is there food and drink on site?

Yes, food and drinks are provided: from 11:00 am there are hot meals and drinks directly in front of the arena at fair prices for a small contribution. In good weather you will find the stand in front of gate 9; if it rains we move to the main entrance.

Where can I park?

There is parking directly at the arena and in the large car park next door. Both are just a few minutes’ walk away.

Where can I find the schedule and results?

The official schedule with all results is updated live on MeinTurnierplan. You can find it further down this page or directly at meinturnierplan.de. There is no video stream.

Do you have accommodation recommendations for visiting teams?

Yes, Regensburg offers a wide choice. Particularly convenient for teams:

Arnulfsaparts, our recommendation for groups and whole teams.
ACHAT Hotel Regensburg im Park, only about 5 minutes’ walk from the arena.
Hotel Platin, less than 500 m from the arena, free parking.
Jugendherberge Regensburg (youth hostel), an affordable option for whole teams, centrally located on the Danube island.

A visit to Regensburg’s old town (UNESCO World Heritage Site) is well worth it.

Is there a supporting programme?

Yes. On the Friday evening before the tournament we meet from 6:00 pm for a relaxed get-together at the Oper Bar (Gesandtenstraße 6, 93047 Regensburg). Attendance is optional, and all teams and companions are very welcome.

Is there an award ceremony?

Yes, the award ceremony takes place on the ice right after the final. All 8 teams receive a trophy, and the best player and the best goaltender of the tournament are also honoured.

Is the arena accessible?

Yes, the Stadtwerk.Donau-Arena is barrier-free.

Can I help as a volunteer?

Absolutely! We are happy about every helping hand. Just get in touch by email at info@ehcregensburg.de.

Will there be a Donau Cup 2027?

We will decide that after the tournament. If the premiere goes well, there is a lot to be said for another edition.
